Two reports reveal on-going challenges in mathematics and science achievement and in reading progress. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) released recently the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) reports. Both reports require careful analysis.
ACER Chief Executive, Professor Geoff Masters, discusses what may be needed further in school improvement. Read his article here. Trevor Cobbold, National Convenor of Save Our Schools, observes that TIMSS and PIRLS show that Australia has a highly inequitable school system, and reinforce the case for action on the recommendations of the Gonski report. VICCSO has an evidence-based, comprehensive and coherent framework for school improvement, based on the ideas and experiences of schools and their communities. Some school principals, teachers, parents, students and researchers suggest that this framework is one of the most strategic and useful. Our website features this model on the home page.
